Drum Workshop

From Jazz to Africa and back. Started by our beloved founder Billy Higgins, the World Stage Drum Workshop is a wonderful hands-on experience designed primarily for young people. Participants learn to play the trap drum set and gain an intimate understanding of rhythm and percussion. Our focus is on its roots and the rudiments. This workshop is coordinated by Cornel Fauler.

Vocal Workshop

Find the music in your voice. The World Stage Vocal Workshop provides vocal coaching, ear training and music theory to singers and aspiring singers. The goal: finding the music in your voice and finding your own voice in the music. This workshop is led by the master vocal teacher Dini Clarke.

Literary Series
Anansi Writers Workshop

Workshop, Featured Reader, Open Mike. The World Stage Anansi Writers Workshop was founded in 1990 by Kamau Daáood, Akilah Oliver, Nafis Nabawi, and Anthony Lyons. In 1993, Michael Datcher initiated the development of a three-part format for the workshop, which continues: 7:30 - 8:30 p.m.: formal workshop; 8:30 - 9 p.m.: featured reader; 9:05 - 10:30 p.m.: open mike. The Workshop continues the tradition of a community workshop began in the late 1960s at the Watts Writers' Workshop, which is where the World Stage co-founder Kamau Daáood got started as a writer. The Anansi Writers Workshop is coordinated by Jawanza Dumisani.

THURSDAY
Jazz Jam Session
9:00 PM - Midnight

Fall in, blow, and help play the magic into being. The Weekly Jam Session, started in 1990 by drummer Cornel Fauler, provides participants with a forum to gain experience in live performance playing standard compositions. It provides the veteran players the opportunity to teach by example as well as just have a great time. It’s a time for musicians to explore musically, fellowship and network. This workshop is coordinated by Matt Gibson.

World Stage Stories (Spring & Fall Series, Check website for specifics)

Intimate conversations with living jazz greats. WORLD STAGE STORIES, produced by Jeffrey Winston and Chet Hanley, is a series of oral history interviews with famous musicians. World Stage Stories is coordinated by Clint Rosemond, Executive Producer.

SATURDAY SCHOOL
Saturday School

A jazz ensemble workshop for high school students having basic music skills. The workshop provides a team of professional jazz musicians and local high school instructors to guide the experience for the students. Programs run October through June. Saturday School is coordinated by Clint Rosemond.

Workshop in jazz going through the decades of the past century of jazz development with Latif. The Jazz Workshop functions as a rehearsal band which explores the wide and wonderful world of jazz as performed by a large ensemble. The workshop is coordinated by Latif.
